 Screenplay submitting can be done in various ways, but before you
submit, make sure your work is copyrighted or registered with the
Writers Guild of America.
1. Submit to an online script service such as inktip.com.
Should a producer request your script, you will be asked to
submit the script in a certain format, possibly Word, Movie Magic,
Final Draft or Adobe format.
The positive of this kind of submission is that all is done
electronically. No
printing and three-hole punching.
2. If you are submitting to a contest, follow carefully their
instructions. So far,
contests still require the print/three-hole punch version.
So make sure you have the correct screenwriting supplies to
bind your script before submitting.
3. If you are attending a seminar, follow instructions—will
you be submitting your script as
hard copy or electronic file?
Finally, follow-up.
Write, email, or call to find out the status of your
script. It’s better
knowing if your script has even been read, etc. than not knowing.
You will be told various responses, such as, "Not for me,
thanks," or "Does not fit our current development
slate." Remember, many filmmakers also know what it's
like when audiences do not go see their movies.
However,
you may hear, "We want to buy or option your
script." Like may filmmakers who find out that the
movie they've dedicated their time to is a big hit, you, too, will
want to celebrate!
